SpamKiller filters spam out of your email box before you see it. In order to do that, SpamKiller must be allowed to check your email box before your email program does.
So if your email program (OE or Outlook) goes to the mailbox first, it's going to take all the mail out of the box. When SpamKiller checks it, there will be no mail there to be filtered. Also, after SpamKiller filters your mail, you still need to have your email program go out to the box and get the mail out of it before you can read it. Therefore, you must switch off the automatic check feature of your email program in order for SpamKiller to work effectively.

How do I Switch Off Automatic Checking in My Email Program to Use SpamKiller?

Microsoft Outlook Express
1. From the toolbar, click Tools > Options.
2. Uncheck the options labeled Send and receive messages at startup and Check for new messages every ... minute(s).

Microsoft Outlook
1. From the toolbar, click Tools > Options.
2. Click on the Internet E-mail tab.
3. Uncheck the option labeled Check my local network connections for new mail every ... minute(s).

Qualcomm Eudora
1. Click Tools > Options.
2. Click Checking Mail from the icon list on the left.
3. Enter 0 in the input box labeled Check for mail every ... minute(s).

Issue:

When you try to send a message in Outlook Express, you may receive the following error message:

An unknown error has occurred. Protocol: SMTP, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800C013B.

Cause:

This behavior can occur if the Sent Items.dbx file is damaged.

Resolution:

To resolve this issue, rename the Sent Items.dbx file from the Outlook Express e-mail files:

1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.

2. In the Named box, type Sent Items.dbx.

3. In the Look In box, click your primary hard disk (usually drive C), and then click Find Now.

4. Right-click the Sent Items.dbx file, and then click Rename.

5. Type Sent Items.old, and then click OK.

6. Restart Outlook Express. This action automatically creates a new Sent Items.dbx file.

If you are are using an IMAP4 server, you will not need to setup a filter/message rule on your email program, as SpamKiller moves any spam tagged messages automatically into a folder called SpamKiller.

If you are are using a POP3 server and want your email program to automatically filter the SpamKiller-marked messages into a separate folder, so that you can more easily review them, continue as follows:

1. Click Tools--> Message Rules, and select Mail; this will bring up a list of all of the filters (or as Outlook Express calls them, rules) that are current set up.

2. Click New to create a new one.

3. Select to filter "Where the Subject line contains specific words" and an action "Move it to the specified folder" and "Stop processing more rules".

4. Now click the blue "contains specified words" in the box at the bottom; type SPAM into the field at the top of the window that appears, and click "Add" to add it to the list. Click OK, then click the blue "specified folder" and click New Folder to create a new folder called SpamKiller1.

5. Under section "4. Name of the rule: " , type SpamKiller1.

Your rule description should now be:

Apply this rule after the message arrives

Where the Subject line contains 'SPAM'

Move it to the SpamKiller1 folder

And Stop processing more rules

NOTE 1: Check Mail Rules tab

Make sure your new rule for SpamKiller is first in the list, if you have a lot of other message rules you use and als make your SpamPal rule end with And Stop processing more rules

NOTE 2: Blocked Senders tab

If you have a lot of blocked senders then it is worth Removing them from the list, as SpamKiller will do a much better job of coping with Spam and removing the blocked senders will also speed up the processing of email.

Outlook 2003:

1. Open Outlook.

2. Click on Tools > Options.

3. Under Preference tab, click on the Junk E-mail... button.

4. The first "Options" tab is where you control the junk filter.

· No Automatic Filtering essentially turns off the junk e-mail filter.

· Low will only filter junk e-mail if it scores a high spam confidence level (SCL) rating.

· High will filter junk e-mail if it scores a medium SCL rating. The lower the rating, the less likely the e-mail is spam.

· Safe Lists Only turns off the junk e-mail filter and will only allow e-mail to be delivered to your inbox if the sender or the recipient is listed in the "Safe Senders" and "Safe Recipients" lists. You might use this option if you have the attitude "If I don't know the sender of the e-mail, it's spam". This may be ok for personal e-mail but this is definitely not an option for businesses attracting new customers.

· The last option allows you to "Permanently delete" junk e-mail. If, after you have been using the junk e-mail filter for some time, you notice that the filter has never filtered one of your legitimate e-mails into the Junk E-mail folder, then you might consider simply deleting the filtered spam e-mail rather than keeping a copy for your review.

5. Select any one option and then click on OK button.

Outlook 2000:

1. Open Outlook

2. Click on Tools > Rules Wizard.

3. Click on New.

4. Click on "Check messages when they arrive" and then Next >.

5. First, click the box next to "with specific words in the subject" - later you may want to repeat this exercise clicking "with specific words in the body". Second, click the specific words link in the bottom text box.

6. A new dialog box will appear where you can Add as many words or phrases as you would like. A good approach is to read you SPAM mail as you receive it in order to choose words that are specific to the SPAM messages that are unlikely to be found in your personal email. For example, spammers may use the word "MLM" or the phrase "debt consolidation". You may always return to this dialog menu to add new words later so don't worry about being too comprehensive. When you are finished, click OK and then Next >.

7. First, click "move it to the specified folder". Second, click the "specified" link in the bottom text box.

8. First, highlight the "Inbox" by clicking once. Second, click the "New" button.

9. Type "SPAM" in the "Name:" text box and click OK.

10. Click "OK" and then "Finish" in the next dialog box.

11. Click "Rename..." to rename the rule we just created

12. Erase "debt consolidation" and choose a name for the specific rule that you just created. I named the rule "SPAM Subject" to reflect that I am trapping SPAM by using keywords and phrases in the subject line of incoming emails. Click "OK" and you will be returned to the main menu.

13. You have just created your first rule and now have two options:

i ) Clicking "OK" will start filtering email. The next incoming email message will be subjected to the keyword and phrase filter you just created. Any emails containing the keywords and phrases in the subject line, will be automatically moved to the SPAM folder.

ii ) Clicking Run Now will bring up a new dialog box allowing you to immediately run your rules on the existing email in your inbox. First, select the "SPAM Subject" rule. Second, "Browse" to your "Inbox" folder. Third, click "Run Now" which will start the filtering process on all email within your Inbox.

A dialog box will display the status of the filter as it scans your email. When complete click "Close".

We have created a SPAM filter for the Subject line of emails. You may want to repeat the process to create a filter for the message body of emails. You can modify your rules by adding or removing keywords and phrases. Anytime you need to modify your rules simply:

1. Click on Tools > Rules Wizard.

2. Click on the Subject link in blue - in this case debt consolidation.

3. Add or remove keywords and phrases. Click OK when finished and OK once more to return to your inbox.

We have to create folders in Inbox and transfer the emails in them. Then Archive those folders and see if this resolves the issue.

In Outlook, archiving is a way to back up or delete old items, such as e-mail messages, appointments, contacts, tasks, journal entries, notes, posted items, and documents. AutoArchive backs up items for you automatically by using either the default settings or settings that you specify. However, sometimes you might not want to worry about all of those settings and just archive an individual folder manually.

Disable SpamKiller and then proceed with the following steps:

Manually archive a folder

1. On the Go menu, click Folder List.

2. Click the folder that you want to archive. In this procedure, the folder being archived is Home Networking.

Note To see if items have the Do not AutoArchive this item check box selected, open the item. On the File menu, click Properties. On the General tab, verify that the Do not AutoArchive this item check box is selected.

7. To archive the folder to a file other than the default Archive.pst file, click Browse, and then specify a different file name, such as Home Networking Archive.pst, and a location, such as My Documents.

Note The default location for Archive.pst is C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\. A Personal Folders file (.pst) is an Outlook data file that stores items such as e-mail messages, contacts, calendar data, tasks, and notes.

8. Click OK.

The items in the folder are moved out of the folder and into the .pst file that you specified. To view the folder items again, open the .pst file.
