Cannot connect to internet after updating.

The reason the computer cannot connect to the Internet is because it cannot translate Names into IP addresses. This is due to the DNS, Domain Name Service, not being set up correctly.

Solution

Trust the IP Addresses of the Internet Service Provider

Determine the current network card settings:

1. Click Start, Run, type cmd and press ENTER.

2. Type ipconfig /all and press ENTER.

3. Write down the information presented.

Add the DNS Server IP address into Security Center:

1. Right-click the M in the system tray and select Open Security Center.

2. Click Internet and Firewall.

3. Select Configure.

4. Click Trusted and Banned IP's.

5. Locate the Trusted IP section and select Add.

6. Select Single IP and type one of the DNS Server IP Addresses into the IP field. (If a second DNS Server is listed from the ipconfig above, repeat.)

7. Click Apply.

8. Close the Internet and Firewall window.

9. Restart the computer and test the DNS service.

Stop the DNS Client Service

1. Click Start, Run, type services.msc and press ENTER.

2. Locate and right-click DNS Client and select Properties.

3. Change the startup type from Automatic to Disabled.

4. Click Stop.

5. Click Apply.

6. Click OK.

7. Restart the computer and test the DNS service.

Additional Information

Test the DNS settings

1. Click Start, Run, type cmd and press ENTER.

2. Type ping www.google.com and press ENTER. (an IP address should respond.)

3. Close the command window.

4. In an Internet browser, type the IP Address from above in the Address: line and press ENTER. If www.google.com is reached the DNS server converted the name and IP address correctly.
